Introduction
This is the first time I have done a versus review, but as it is a question I get regularly asked I thought I would do one on these two handhelds.
Specifications
Channels: Both CB handhelds have access to all 10 bands including UK, EU and Poland.
Features: The Midland 42 has quite a few features, but with autosquelch, 3 level variable power, very large LCD screen and built in speech processor the Intek H520 wins hands down on this one!
Both handhelds have a 'Standard'(Icom) wired accessory socket, so you can attach various different accessories.
Both sets come with a BNC type rubber duck, car kit, mains charger(although you need to buy batteries) and an Operator's Manual, however the Midland 42 comes with a faux leather case and two battery packs, which is handy to have a backup.
Performance
Receive: The quality of the receive on both radios is good, although when side by side the Intek H520 does sound slightly louder and clearer, the Intek H520 also has the added advantage of auto squelch.
Transmit: Plenty of volume on transmit too, deviation easily hits 2khz on both radios. The power is there on both radios, although I do advise to use decent high capacity batteries in the Intek as it only takes 6, whereas the Midland 42 takes 8.
Build Quality: Both radios feel solid. Was a bit fiddly to change bands on the Midland 42, but on the Intek H520 it was easy with the big menu button on the front.
Conclusion
The Midland 42 is a great quality handheld with quite a few features, however as they are both priced around the same mark, with better clarity and all the extra features I would go for the Intek H520 every time.
