More MIDLAND Reviews
Introduction
Midland have been in the CB radio game for many years now, and most people have heard the name. This particular Midland radio has been around quite a while too(as a 12v version). It is the cheapest mobile rig Midland offer, but it is very basic. It is one of the smallest Midland Rigs and only has the standard UK and EU channels built-in. The thing that makes this radio slightly different to any other basic rig is that the latest version has the ability to work on 12 or 24 volts.
Specifications
Channels: 40 UK and 40 EU, FM only.
Features: (from left to right) Volume and Squelch rotary controls, UK/EU Button and Up & Down buttons. The display is an orange backlit LCD with a power meter down the side.
The back of the rig has the 12 Volt DC power lead, Extension speaker socket and SO239 antenna socket.
The set comes complete with a good sized mic however the up/down buttons on the top are a little bit fiddley. It plugs into a 6 pin socket(P6 wired) on the front panel. Also included is an Operator's Manual, power lead, mounting bracket and side screws.
Performance
Receive: There is plenty of volume from the in-built speaker. Squelch is quite slack though, needs to be turned at least half way to cut out any noise.
Transmit: Plenty of volume on transmit, deviation hits 2khz and microphone is quite sensitive without being over the top. Power is set to exactly 4 watts, however meter only showed 3 out of 4 bars on TX.
Build Quality: Radio feels solid, however my radio had problems with 12/24v dropper circuit and had to be repaired under warranty after 2 months. Not sure if this is a common problem though.
Recommendations
The Mildand 38 Plus 12/24 is a low priced rig with the advantage of 12 and 24 volt operation so could be handy for lorry drivers who do not have a 12 volt dropper.
If you're looking for a very basic, low-priced rig and want to use it in a lorry then the Midland 38 Plus could be the radio for you.
