MIDLAND 42 MULTI REVIEW

Introduction

Midland have been in the CB radio game for many years now, and over the years have produced some quality CB radios. This handheld CB radio is one of them. It is extremely compact (not like the CB handhelds from the 80's!) and relatively simple to use. The latest version has all the European channels built in too.

Specifications

Channels(Latest version): 10 Bands including UK and EU, AM & FM.

Features: (from left to right, top to bottom) Squelch rotary control, on/off/vol rotary control, channel up/down buttons, dual watch, scan, light, emergency button, last channel, Hi/Low, Lock, Quick up/down buttons.

On the top there is a BNC antenna socket and 'Standard'(Icom) wired accessory socket, so you can attach various different accessories.

The set comes with a BNC type rubber duck, car kit, mains charger(although you need to buy batteries), 2 battery packs, and an Operator's Manual.

Takes 8 AA rechargeable or 6 AA Alkaline Batteries.

Performance

Receive: Volume is quite good for a handheld. Sensitivity is as good as a mobile rig. Squelch works well, although there is no autosquelch.

Transmit: Plenty of volume on transmit too, deviation easily hits 2khz and microphone is sensitive without being over the top. Power out is 4 watts on high setting.

Build Quality: Radio feels very well built. The battery packs are a bit fiddly to get the batteries in though, but that could be because of my big hands!

The only thing I will say is that the switching of the frequency bands can be a bit tricky(even with normal size hands!), as you have to hold down two small buttons on the front whilst turning it on at the top.

Recommendations

The Midland 42 CB handheld is a good quality solid handheld. It has some handy features and comes with a car kit for use with a vehicle antenna.

If you are looking for a good quality handheld that works well then the Midland 42 is for you.

However there may be a new kid on the block! Check out my vs. review below...
