Introduction

Midland have been in the CB radio game for many years now, and most people have heard the name. This particular Midland 48 Plus Multi radio has been around quite a while too(as a UK Only version). It has many features including memory buttons and PA facility, although it doesnt seem to have some of the features that alot of the newer CB's have as standard, such as Auto Squelch and Speech Processor. The latest version of this rig can access the European channels (MultiStandard), so it is legal to use it across Europe(with appropriate licence).

 

Specifications

Channels: 10 Bands including UK and EU. AM and FM.

Features: (from left to right)Rotary channel changer, Volume and Squelch rotary controls, RF gain and Mic gain rotary controls, Memory buttons, Dual Watch, Emergency button, Quick Up/Down, PA/CB switch, ANL switch, Lo/DX switch, AM/FM and Scan. The display is an LCD Screen with orange backlight.

The back of the rig has the 12 Volt detachable DC power lead, Extension/PA speaker socket and SO239 antenna socket.

The set comes with quite a nice chunky mic, (unlike its bigger brother, the Midland 48 Excel Multi). It plugs into a 6 pin socket(P6 wired) on the front panel. Also included is an Operator's Manual, power lead, mounting bracket and side screws.

 

Performance

Receive: There is plenty of volume from the in-built speaker. Squelch works well but is slightly slack, needs to be turned over half way to cut out any noise.

Transmit: Plenty of volume on transmit, deviation hits 2khz and microphone is quite sensitive without being over the top. Power is set to exactly 4 watts.

Build Quality: The Midland 48 Excel CB Radio feels solid and is quite easy to use. The only thing I had a problem with was changing the frequency band, you need to hold down two buttons on the front whilst switching it on which can be a bit tricky.

 

Recommendations

The Mildand 48 Plus Multi is a nice CB radio, with quite a few features. However it has been around a few years now and lacks a few of the features that you are finding on the newer breed of CB's on the market today.

If you're looking for a Multi channel radio with a proven track record, and are willing to sacrifice auto squelch and a speech processor then you cant go wrong with the Midland 48 Plus Multi.
