MIDLAND 98 REVIEW

Introduction

Midland have been in the CB radio game for many years now, and most people have heard the name. This particular Midland 98 radio has been around quite a while too. It is one of the more basic rigs Midland offer with only 40 UK and 40 EU channels. But it does have a couple of nice features, including Scan and ESP(although personally I dont think Midlands ESP is much to shout about).

Specifications

Channels: 40 UK and 40 EU, FM only.

Features: (from left to right) Scan button, UK/EU button, Up/Down buttons, Squelch and Volume rotary controls. The display is an orange backlit LCD with a power meter along the bottom.

The back of the rig has the 12 Volt DC power lead, Extension speaker socket and SO239 antenna socket.

The set comes complete with a good sized mic however the up/down buttons on the top are a little bit fiddley. It plugs into a 6 pin socket(P6 wired) on the front panel. Also included is an Operator's Manual, power lead, mounting bracket and side screws.

Performance

Receive: There is plenty of volume from the in-built speaker. Squelch is quite slack though, needs to be turned at least half way to cut out any noise.

Transmit: Plenty of volume on transmit, deviation hits 2khz and microphone is quite sensitive. Power is set to exactly 4 watts.

Build Quality: The Midland 98 feels solid, however the squelch knob seemed a little loose.

Recommendations

The Mildand 98 Plus is a low priced rig with the advantage of built in scan and LCD display.

If you're looking for a basic, low-priced rig with minimal features then the Midland 98 could be for you.
